Has this happened to anyone else, serious side affects to Clarithromycin?
I have a bacterial ulcer in tummy called Helicobacter pylori, and was put on Clarithromycin 500mg 4 tablets a day. I was only on it two days and its the worst feeling ever. I had severe depression, confusion, anxiety, crying, and felt suicidal as well and a horrid taste in mouth. All the bad stuff that happened in my life it intensified it in nightmares giving negative feelings and generally unwell. I am allergic to Penicillin so wonder if its connected. Has anyone else had serious side effects to Clarithromycin?

Hi. I am about to start taking it today for an amoxycillin resistant chest infection. I have also taken it in the past for pneumonia. If you have a look at the leaflet in the box you will see that all the symptoms you've listed are all side effects of the medication. I am very worried about taking it again myself as it makes my mental health problems much worse as well as my disability and chronic pain.
Does it make it any easier to know that things will improve at the end of the course of medication? Can you get through it with the support of friends and the Samaritans?
If you can't go on with the treatment please call the out of hours doctor first. There are a few drug combinations left to treat your condition such as ranitidine bismuth citrate, tetracycline and metronidazole for 7 days or a quadruple therapy such as omeprazole, bismuth, tetracycline and metronidazole for 7 days.
All treatments will have side effects it's just clarithromycin is probably the worst to take particularly mental health wise. Wish me luck!

I doubt it's the antibiotic. At worst, it may cause diarrhea.
Go see your family doc.
