What was the impact of American business divestment in ending apartheid?

Were the efforts of American college students convincing their universities to divest in South Africa, various other business embargoes, etc done by the United States significant factors in bring an end to the Apartheid government?

    After the end of apartheid there was no foreign investment to keep the economy going.

    There was a great market crash, farms stopped producing because white farmers were thrown off their land and it was given to those who did not know how to farm. Riots, starvation, and rampant unemployment.

    All because outsiders decided how a country should conduct its business.

    South Africa is only now starting to recover form this problem, long after those college kids have moved on with their Western lives. Not one of them moved to South Africa to help solve the problems they created.

    US - and other Western companies - traded with South Africa on the quiet throughout Apartheid.
