Thailand assistance needed?

l am a UK passport holder and l already know about the visa exemption. My initial idea is to visit for the 30 days and meet up with my fiancee who is in the Philippines. She also is visa exempt. The plan is to spend that 30 days visit as a vacation after our being separated for almost a year.

l can afford the return air fares for us both but will be on limited finance for everything else during that time.

Clearly, we will not be interested in the usual tourist agenda - no nightlife, no binge-drinking, no upmarket restaurants, just the very basic existence.

My main worry is that we would arrive at the Airport in Bangkok and have no basic accommodation available ahead of time. By basic l mean furnished and clean but cheapish. Then, how to get to the location. Imagine arriving at London Heathrow with no plan in place !!

Note that l have been to Thailand before, about 12 years ago, and did a road trip from Bangkok to ChangMai and have lived in the Philippines for eight years so the culture is not an issue.

Essentially, l guess that l am looking for a local contact who can make life simple for me, whether a friendly Thai or an experienced expat.

Any offers?

Update:

Additional #1: My UK income is £750/month

Additional #2: l am also interested in the 60-day visa option.

Update 2:

Additional #3: £750 = $1'272 = 41'315 baht available per month.

Update 3:

All looking good so far and many thanks for all the input. Appreciated. There is but one aspect that is confusing. l am very interested in getting the 60-day extension. Must this be arranged ahead of time via embassies in UK and, for my fiancee, in the Philippines? OR is the leave and re-entry option the simplest?

I don't think you'll have any problem with finding accommodation in Bangkok. Because they don't have as many tourists now as they used to have before the recent coup there. Hotels there probably have a lot of vacancies, which means that you can just walk in and get a room.

But if you want to relax and save money, then Bangkok is probably the worst place you can stay at for this. Because it's more expensive, polluted, and traffic clogged than virtually any other place in Thailand.

There is a regular bus going from the international airport in Bangkok to the tourist town of Pattaya. Pattaya has so many big and small hotels all over the place that you are certain to find a room there without any booking, unless you go there around Christmas or the New Year. This town is small enough that you can just walk from place to place, without the hassle and expense of taking taxis or buses. The hotels there are cheaper than in Bangkok. And you can relax on the beach there.

I suggest that you look on the internet for information about the Pattaya Bus at the international airport and about Pattaya, and maybe print a map of the airport and Pattaya. If you do some research ahead of time, then you'll have an easier time going to where you need to be, when you are tired and a little confused from too much travel.

Budget is 41,000 baht or 1,366 baht per day

I would either go to Pattaya, or Hua Hin

Pattaya is where many single men go and local Thai go for a break

Hua Hin is the city where the King is currently residing, his summer home.

I have been to both. I just came back from visiting Hua hin for 4 days in May. Loved the place Pattaya is jammed right up to the ocean. Hua Hin is more like a seaside resort.

I found one hotel for instance between Hua Hin and Cha Am at around 640 baht per night called the Bedberry Hua Hin Resort on agoda.com, Just constructed in 2013 which could mean anything there. At least the paint and flooring are new and most things should work.

    Agoda.com

sawadee.com, might have to wait 24 hours for confirmation

    asiarooms.com

Are 3 good sites for hotels.

My reasons for going to Hua Hin:

    King is there, no protests

    It's cooler there than Bangkok

The water is cleaner because its coming out from the south. Pattaya's water is mixed with the Chao Phraya river sludge from industrial waste from the mainland.

It's got a long wide beach, pattaya's is very narrow.

Prices are about the same as Pattaya.

    Getting there:

From the airport there a number of shuttle buses.

Take bus 551 to Victory Monument from Suvarnabhumi

    http://www.bangkokairportonline.com/node/56

Train: forget it, cost 171 baht, time involved up to 6 hours.

Bus: Take from the southern Terminal 3-4 hours

    http://www.tourismhuahin.com/busses-huahin.php

Mini bus/Van: 180-200 baht from Victory Monument area, takes about 3-4 hours ride.

    http://www.tourismhuahin.com/minivan-huahin.php

I'd take the minvan its a bit crowded but, a bit fun. Took it going back to Bangkok

There are 2 night markets in Hua Hin and should be one in Cha Am, beach is walking distance.

For a spartan lifestyle one can nosh at leisure, there's lots of small markets for snacks and drinks and just splurge for dinner.

    Good luck

it is always wise to book a night or two in any hotel through the internet before you arrive; and then search for a room with bathroom and balcony ( tv, fridge, furniture & wife ).

second, 41,000 bahts is a princely budget if you gonna live the way you described ( esp. if you can cook and not into nightlife ).

third, there are plenty of accommodations to choose from in thailand. i'd suggest either Chiang Mai or Pattaya. i usually get a room such as described above for 6,000 bahts a month utilities excluded / clean and safe, with housekeeping twice a week.

my advice is always to rent a motorbike on a monthly basis to move around ( 3,000 bahts a month + 1,000 bahts deposit ) and spend one or two days checking out different rooms. you'll see signs out side saying "Rooms for Rent: Monthly - Weekly Basis".

anything more than what i wrote above and i'd have to take you by the hand.

    enjoy & stay safe.

I rent a condo in Center Condo, Pattayatai (South Pattaya). I left there in April 2014, and the rent was 9,000 baht + electric (2,000 aprox) + cable (200 baht) + water (200 baht approx) and then 9,000 deposit. That is by going into the office, not an agent, and renting a studio condo. It is best not to be on the "Wat Side". It is close to Friendship grocery, Tops.

If you want to call use your dialing criteria for Thailand and then their local number is: 038-411151 or 2 (voice) or fax 038-411785.

To get a look around the area you can use Google Earth.

Yes you can get by on 41,000baht for two people. Rent and utilities are about 11,200 and food etc in your lifestyle is not that much more. If you go there, on Tuesday and Friday they have the market on Soi Bukauoi and the stuffed waffles are 10 baht each, and I have never had better.

I recommend a $40/night hotel in BKK which requires no deposit and you can leave it and go to others as you choose via your own examination of them.

Book into the Dynasty Hotel in Nana district for your first night at this rate and then move where you want to go. It is a clean safe hotel with good rate. Move on as you need.

That is enuf money. Be brave, just arrive and enjoy!
