What kind of coffee pot would you recommend for a college student?
I am going to be a freshman next year and I am trying to figure out which kind of coffee maker I should get. I have been looking into a Keurig, but there are so many kinds and I am not sure which model would be the best. I am not allowed to have the standard coffee pot with a hot plate in my room. I am not concerned too much about the cost of K-cups (if I do purchase a Keurig). I am not a "5 cup a day" coffee drinker, I'm just a one in the morning type of girl.
Please give me some suggestions!!

Even with the price of k-cups, it's still a lot cheaper than buying a cup of coffee anywhere. Spending $80 on a Keurig one time and 50 cents per K-cup per day is still going to be a lot cheaper than spending, say, $2-3 on a cup of coffee from Starbucks every day. If you don't want to buy the k-cups, you can buy a refillable coffee filter that you can use any coffee you want in for $15-20.
You don't need filtered or distilled water for a Keurig, unless the tap water just tastes bad. It takes a long time for calcium deposits to build up on them.
I like the options of the Keurig Vue systems (model names start with a V) but they're a little bigger and more expensive than the k-cup systems, and the Vue packs seem to be a lot harder to find. They can do espresso drinks, though. As far as flavors and coffee variety go, the k-cups definitely win out.
The person who said Keurigs make "shitty coffee" is wrong. They make perfectly good coffee. I have had coffee made in just about every way imaginable, from boiling it on a campfire, to french presses, to fancy coffee houses. Keurigs make good coffee.
I do agree with trying to find one that's small, though. My dorm had some of the biggest rooms on campus and it was still a little cramped. The K10 mini is probably the smallest one but it doesn't have a water reservoir, so you have to add water every time you use it. Also, you can do this with it: http://www.keurig.com/college#school-link. I think the K45 is the smallest one with a reservoir.
The Keurig website has options for you to sort by your needs for your coffee maker, though. It really comes down to personal preference and what you can afford. http://www.keurig.com/shop/brewers/all-brewers

Keurigs are overpriced and make sh*tty coffee. Get an electric kettle and an Aeropress. If you get in trouble for the electric kettle, you can heat water in your microwave and still use the Aeropress. The Aeropress makes one cup of coffee at a time, doesn't take up much space (it's a little smaller than a can of Arizona tea), and is basically idiot-proof and simple to clean.

While a Keurig can be expensive I suggest you get a Mr. Coffee brand Keurig. Its basically the same thing as a Keurig only its made by Mr. Coffee. There is one on ebay.com for sale that has 2 cup choices of 6oz and 10oz and holds 36oz of water. Its a used floor model so the box will be open. I got the same exact one on ebay form the same seller 3 months ago and it works fine. Basically its brand new with the box open. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mr-Coffee-K-CUP-single-cup...

Keurig coffee will only taste that way if you do not know the right k-cup for your taste buds. there are plenty to choose from, and the price of the brewer will pay it self over time. K10 http://www.keurig.ca/brewers/keurig-mini-plus-brew... would be best for students and affordable specially for those one cup a day type of girls.

I guess you can check out the internet for some cool coffee maker brands. I had been worrying about the same a year ago when I had started college and a friend recommended me this site http://coffeemeplease.com/ for checking out some coffee machines. I found a really nice one from there and I think you should check for some good ones online too.

K-cups are not cheap. Even the generic Costco ones are about 50 cents each. It does add up, but if you only drink one cup, it's reasonable (unless you share it with your friends.)
I drink more tea than coffee, so I have a hot water boiler in my office (am a nurse), and when I drink coffee, it's instant. (!)

A cafetiere - cheap to buy, no expensive filters or pods, takes up very little room, easy to clean, doesn't need to be plugged in, can easily be filled in a college kitchen without needing a kettle in your room.

The keurig system ain't cheap. I don't know if they would allow you to have an electric kettle. If they do, then you can use that and an aero press, which costs around $20 or less. Also you would need to make sure you grind the coffee fine for a press, nor coarse for a drip machine. If you can't even have a kettle, you can heat the water in a microwave or on a stove top of your dorm has one. As a last resort, instant coffee but I'm not too crazy about that. Hope you find the solution that works!

Here are two thoughts:
1. Why not just get coffee in the dinning hall?
2. If you must get one for your room, consider the K10 MINI Plus. Why? because you will have very, very little space to put this machine, and the K10 MINI has the smallest "footprint" of the Keurig systems.
Please get some information about what furniture and space you'll have in your room and discuss this with your roommate. Storage is at premium in dorm rooms. You may find that the convenience of having your own little coffee maker is outweighed by having to have a cup, cleaning the cup, having filtered water to put into your maker, storing the K cups, having a place to throw out your drippy used K-cups, etc.
I know many students that got coffee makers, little refrigerators and mini-microwaves only to find they took up precious space and they could get food and coffee nearly 24-7 on campus anyway.
Good luck!
