noselessman is the only correct person here, unfortunately. There isn't a whole lot you can do with 5gals! Upgrade to 20 and you'd have many more options.

For 5 gallons though you can keep

1 Betta (male or female, but not several females. The tank isn't large enough for a proper sorority)

Shrimp (I'd say 5-10, depending on the species)

Snails (Nerite snails are popular and pretty)

You are welcome to mix and match these options for a "community" tank, but it's always a possibility the Betta will go after the invertebrates.

    Anyway, good luck!

You could try a betta, which are really great fish but pretty aggressive, so most tankmates are out of the question. A SINGLE dwarf puffer is also possible, though they are a little advanced as they require live foods (can be trained to frozen), need well maintained tanks, and need well decorated tanks. You could also try a little herd of clown killifish, which are pretty and fairly easy to breed, but they tend to stay on the top layer of an aquarium. You could also try a smaller species of wild betta, but they tend to be more sensitive to water parameters and cannot be fed flake food. Micro fish, such as the microrasbora family which includes the gorgeous chili rasbora, can be paired with micro shrimp like the cherry shrimp to create a mini environment.

    1 male betta or 4 females .

One amazing shrimp tank with about 20 shrimp with different shapes, sizes and colours.

A small school of say 6 neon tetras OR 5 xray tetra

They are just examples work from them and you will be fine, just research before you buy, and dont buy from a chain store (petco wallmart pets at home) buy from an independent dealer and you will have alot less problem just from that.

Keep up with water checks and changes and a FISHLESS cycle for 6WEEKS, no less.

    Good luck..
