I was a kid in the '70s, the heyday of Saturday morning cartoons. They were funded mainly by companies buying ad time. The commercials were all toys, candy and sugar-coated cereal.
At some point, parents started getting together and protesting what they perceived as the exploitation of their children Without the big ad revenue coming in, Saturday morning cartoons--as I remember them--eventually died out.
I would often watch cartoons from around 6AM to noon on Saturdays. Not so much in the summer, though, because we did a lot of camping.

Well there is still Vortex and some local stations air there own scheduled cartoons. But with the rise of Cartoon Network, Nick, and Disney local Saturday morning brodcast hit a sharp decline. In the end it became cheaper for stations to simply replace there cartoon block with reruns or shows with a cheaper licencing fee.
