when i hook up my Apple TV to my computer, nothing happens...?
ITunes doesn't even recognize it... I thought an alternative way of updating the software was to hook it up to your computer and update it that way... am I wrong?
my second question then I guess is why is there a mini usb port on the apple TV if you cant connect it to a computer?

I sort of agree with "L", but this is in response to your follow-up question. In the case of the 2nd and 3rd generation AppleTV units, it is a micro (not mini) USB port...

Page 32. The USB port is used for restoring AppleTV firmware using iTunes when problems are encountered that cannot be resolved any other way. If your iTunes can't see the AppleTV, there is something else going on. "Restore" is not "update".

Same comment - USB port for "service and diagnostics", not updating - though there is no comment similar to the 3rd generation version related to restoring.
So you can connect AppleTV to a computer - but not for updating AppleTV firmware.

Nothing is supposed to happen. Behaving as designed and documented. iTunes recognized AppleTV when the computer ans AppleTV are on and part of the same local area network.There is nothing anywhere that says to update AppleTV the way you are doing it. Get AppleTV on a LAN that is connected to the Internet then use the AppleTV menu option to update the firmware.
