if an act is illegal is tort thrown out?

I understand a personal injury lawsuit could ensure; however, can a tort still be partially successful if the act or omission is illegal?

You can't sue for an illegal act. For instance, your corner drug dealer shorts you on your last purchase.

You can't sue him for the difference.

    It's called unclean hands.

Now if you were in the middle of buying your drugs and Joe Schmo runs you over with his cab, you can sue Joe Schmo.
