Please read the following text and tell me the meaning of 'except for a life'?

Now I could write a book and at the beginning I would tell how I opened safes whose contents were bigger and more valuable that what any safecracker anywhere had opened - except for a life, of course - but compare to the furs or the gold bullion, I have them all beat.

OK, I had to go to the source (Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman) in order to understand it in context, because the quote wasn't clear.

He's saying that the contents of the safes he opened were more valuable than anything except a human life. It's just a poorly written sentence, more conversational than good writing should be.
