What is the deal with people I don't know asking to be friends on Facebook?

Are they just looking to have a giant number of friends? Sometimes they don't have many, so this doesn't look to be the case. Or is there some scam element I am not seeing? Or do they just think I look super cool?

They are normally scammers, catfish or pranks. I would never add anyone I do not personally know and have not met face to face on Facebook. Do you know how many homes have been robbed because of this? People randomly add friends, then post things like "Enjoying my week in Florida" or "Off to John's wedding this weekend" or even "Having a romantic dinner at xxx" which is all any robber needs to know that you are not home and he can come break into your home.
