(Titanic) Why were the upper class so cruel twords the lower class?

Why did so many people in upper class only think of themselves. How could they watch others die just because they didn't have as much, everyone's life has worth. How can people be so cruel, I understand many would still have parshed but dam so many could have been saved. I'm not wealthy and only 16 so I just wonder how can people have no compassion....

It has always been like that and will be until further notice, the thing about the Titanic first class is the relatives were so stupid as to be unable to understand just how it was possible that THEIR relative, who they where and the position they held died next to a common peasant, the Astor's being with that lot, of course we know the Astor's do we not ? David Cameron's wife is one, say no more then.

That hasn't changed. It's called the haves and the have-nots. The richest 1% of this country owns the majority of the wealth while HARD working families struggle every single day

Some people are naturally smarter, bigger, stronger, what have you...

They've never experienced the sorts of pains a person with less intellect, size, or strength has. They have no means by which to compare the sufferings of others to their own, so they lack compassion.

In fact, for many wealthy people, suffering means a bad hair day, a rainy picnic.

Anyway, point is: wealthy people have more, so they need less. When you need less, you rely less on others. When you rely less on others, you rely on yourself. When you rely on yourself while others must rely on others, you feel special, better. When you think you're better than others, you're not compassionate. If a stranger drowns in front of you, it might be traumatic, but nothing changes for you. You're still alive. If you don't rely on others, all you need is yourself and there's no reason to care.
