What's the difference between a "manufactured" home and a "modular" home?

A manufactured home (formerly known as a mobile home) is made in a factory and then shipped to it's destination in 1, 2, 3 or 4 pieces depending on how many wide it is. These homes are typically anchored to a foundation, however in some instances they are left on the trailer and wheels for someone to drunkenly do something stupid with in the future.

A modular home (always known as a modular home) comes in different pieces (kind of like grown-up legos) which are assembled in a factory, delivered to the site and then the home is built on it's foundation there. These were made common I think around the 70's or 80's because an architect could make up a bunch of similar, yet different floor plans that could use the same walls with the same windows in the same location and the same roof gables and so on. A madular home is less common in most states these days and typically harder or more expensive to insure since insurance usually can't get OEM or used modular pieces it's quite expensive to cover a small loss as it often involves significant construction to update the dwelling.
