World War One Recruitment Policy?

I am in the process of writing a monologue about a very patriotic young man who has attempted to volunteer for the Army during WW1 but due to a medical condition (Epilepsy) he has been turned down, would he be allowed to take part in other non combat duties such as stretcher bearing in a similar sense to how conscious objectors would have been offered? Would he still have been shunned in the street and have white feathers pinned on him? Any information would be appreciated.

He would carry around a medical excemption form,he could show that to anyone who attempted to give him a white feather,he would be told to do other war work, he could work on the land, in a factory making munitions,if he could drive he could drive ambulances, be a stretcher bearer,an uncle of mine had really bad eyes, he tried to join up but was turned down, he went to work on a farm all through the war.He would not be shunned in the street, people were busy leading their own lives.
