If a raccoon comes down a tree on my property and chases me am I allowed to retaliate?

Racoons are in my avocado tree. They come down and begin to challenge me when I try to shoo them away. some even begin to attack. What can I do? The city says they are free roaming wildlife.

If the local animal control won't do their job, you will need to purchase some live traps and trap the pest yourself. Large live traps can be purchased at www.harborfreight.com for around $20 each. Set them up and suspend pieces of chicken in the back end of the trap, but far enough from the sides and back so the coons can't reach inside to get the chicken. If you just throw the bait in, the coons will roll the traps around and shake them until the bait falls out or they can reach it.

Once you have them in a live trap, use extreme caution, a coon can bite a finger off if your hand is next to the cage. Get help and use a pole to pick up the cage. Set it on a piece of plastic sheeting in your trunk and take them to the country and release them. Use caution when you release them, they can attack you instead of running away into the woods. Keep in mind, a Raccoon will kill a grown large dog if given the chance. Harming you is much easier than killing a dog.

Yes, you can retaliate! I suggest water-boarding! Actually, seriously, water works great as a deterrent. I've used a motion-activated sprinkler for years. It works to keep rabbits and deer out of the garden and can also keep stray cats from using your garden as a litter box. Raccoons, though liking water, will not appreciate a sudden jet from a rain-bird type sprinkler and it should encourage them to go climb someone else's tree! I hope this helps.

Call animal control in your area or a game warden if you have one and report that you have aggressive Raccoons on your property. Ask them also if they will trap and relocate them. Sometimes they will leave traps outside and have you to call them when an animal is inside. I don't know if you can retaliate, but usually they say that if such an animal is not afraid of you that it may have rabies; and it could consider you a threat and is protecting it's food (avocados).

Put some food and water out for them. install a metal sheet in the shape of an inverted cone around your tree to prevent them from climbing it. Raccoons do not have saliva glands, and need water when they eat. You can always add something to the water.

What's wrong with waiting for them to leave?
