I've been invited to a bridal shower with a high tea theme & it's been requested we wear a hat. What kind of hat does one wear to high tea?

Fancy. Often with feathers and tulle. if you saw the royal wedding a few years ago, you have it.

If you want to see some examples, go to amazon.com and in search enter

    ladies tea party hats

You, of course don't have to buy them there, but this will give you and idea.

In some places, these are known as church ladies hats.

You might just buy a hat--maybe a sun hat if you want a large one--and add flowers, ribbons, tulle, ribbon, whatever you like. Of course, you can also start with a smaller hat ( straw, felt, etc.) or even a comb and add what you like. Any craft store (Hobby Lobby, Joanne's, etc.) or even the craft section of some variety stores should have a lots of stuff.

This sounds fun! Wish I had been invited to a party like this!

If you want to go over the top, make a hat from things that can be taken off and reused. I am a bit over creative, so I might try lacy bridal panties folded to make a flower, etc. Of course, it depends on how well you know the bride and her taste!

    Enjoy!

A big hat. Just like you would wear if you went to tea with the Queen. OR you could wear what's called a Fascinator (it's a frippery little thing usually with a piece of netting attached to it). Just don't turn up wearing a wool cap or a felt fedora.

Like the kind of hats Kate MIddletown is often in, or all those English ladies at their various social events. However, if it were me, since I don't have hats like that and I'd look ridiculous in one, I'd probably wear my hat with the kitty ears on it (well, it's more like a hood or a cap but it does have ears), cause that's the kind of person I am. You could wear like a little pillbox hate (like Jackie Kennedy often wore). Ooo, or one of those little hats that has a veil on it.

Many women would wear a Victorian type hat from the late 1800's. You can also go with a more modern hat, sort of summery. Even a small hat with a veil would look pretty. Just go with a retro look and nice.

Here are some links that should help:

Of course, if you are in doubt, ask the host or hostess of the party. They will spell it out for you as to how they want you to dress. Have fun! :)

Any kind of hat you want. A large, fancy hat with a lot of trim would be fun.

Note that most British people don't wear hats to tea these days.

Note, too, that whoever invited you doesn't know tea terminology very well. "High tea" does not refer to a fancy afternoon tea. "High tea" is served around 6 pm and is a working-class term for the evening meal many Americans would call "supper" or even "dinner".

Lili's got you covered. I wouldn't correct the bride ( unless you know her well enough that she won't overreact or feel slighted or simply want to annoy her). Wear your most lady like outfit and the fanciest, most ornate and ridiculously ribboned , feather and tulle filled hat you can find. The more pompous the better.

A very feminine-looking hat, perhaps with floral and ribbon trim. They're hard to find these days, but you might be able to start with a plain straw form and decorate it yourself. Look in places like Jo-Ann Fabrics.

I would wear a fascinator hat like these (https://www.google.ca/search?q=fascinator+hat&rlz=... or a wide brimmed hat to actually shield the sun from your eyes if you'll be outdoors. I recommend going to a hat shop (and not ordering online) since hats can be very tricky according to head size and the hair style you want to go with it

It's requested, not complusory, if you don't want to wear one then don't, maybe just put a ribbon or flower in your hair.
