it's a biased question. lots of other people who did not have knowledge of African cultures and share African values have survived in America. So it's not like African cultures and values uniquely qualified him to survive. People are people. Either they're dumb as rocks and won't survive, or they have some smarts and can survive.
So it's better to proceed from there and explain that he wasn't dumb as a rock. So what did he know?
