More specifically, what does control mean? I'm in a class (study abroad) and this is on the syllabus. I assume it's something like test, but there are no more details, and I can't find anything to verify that. Also, why wouldn't he just say "prueba" or something similar?

Yeah, it's like a test "es un examen" They want to evaluate you, to keep track of what you've learned. That's all. In other words, you have to approve four tests of reading to pass.
