  • How are big companies allowed to use instagram photos from their users?

I think it's common knowledge that you can't steal someone's photos from instagram to just post wherever you want, but there are loads of competitions where a company will say post a certain kind of picture with a certain hashtag and you could be featured in blah blah blah publication.

Seems innocent enough. Chances are that the person wants to be featured in whatever publication by virtue of using the hashtag. But since a company can't "own" a hashtag, do they still get written permission from the owner of the photo? Or do they take their chances?

  • Is my ancestry half of everything from each of my parents?

We ve always said that since my mom is half Mexican (and I know that by itself is not an ethnic group), each of the four kids are one-quarter Mexican.

But is that true? Or could I "be more Mexican" than my siblings or vice versa, considering I get half of my genes from each parent?

  • Does England have a president?

I know that the UK is headed by PM David Cameron, but I'm a little confused on the structure of the whole thing. Does England have its own leader? What sorts of rules are set by the individual entities inside the UK (England, Scotland, Wales, N. Ireland)?

  • Could I bee a knee model?

I have exquisite knees. No way could I be a regular model, but I think if it existed, maybe I could be knee model. So...is that a thing?

  • What's the best translation from Spanish to English?

I'm currently studying abroad in Ecuador. I was at a cafe and asked for the wifi password. The barista said something like, "de la luna ocho". I didn't understand, so I repeated it back to her, and she said yes. So, I tried "delalunaocho", then "delaluna8" then "delaluna08", and none of them worked, so I asked her to write it. She wrote, "12345678".

So, what was she actually saying?

  • Translate this sentence from Spanish to English.?

Evaluación: cuatro controles de lectura con un valor de 25 puntos cada uno.

More specifically, what does control mean? I'm in a class (study abroad) and this is on the syllabus. I assume it's something like test, but there are no more details, and I can't find anything to verify that. Also, why wouldn't he just say "prueba" or something similar?

    Thanks in advance.

  • "at every corner of the earth" vs "on every corner of the earth"?

I'm having a little trouble with the wording in an essay. My sentence:

"As such, he’s celebrated at every corner of the Earth."

I keep wanting to change it to:

"As such, he’s celebrated on every corner of the Earth."

Neither of them sound quite right and everything I've found with Google seems to indicate both are fine. Which is correct? If both are correct, which sounds better? Or should I change the whole thing?

I wouldn't care that much except that it's one of the first sentences in my paper, so it needs to give a good impression.

  • Where are these people from?

I live on the west coast, but am driving across the country. Around the west side of Texas, I started hearing people with strange accents - similar to Americans but they sound less intelligent. I've talked to people from all over the world and am always fascinated with accents, so in Arkansas I finally broke down and asked one what country she was from. She just stared at me blankly, neither of us knew what to say...like she was embarrassed or something!

It seems every other person has one of these accents, so is there a large consentration of immigrants from a specific country in these states (Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas)? What country could they be from?

  • Why don't stray dogs band together in packs?

Every time I'm in Mexico, I see tons of stray dogs. Most wild dogs, including grey wolves (where most domestic dogs come from), live and hunt in packs.

The obvious answer might be that either domestication takes that instinct out of them or that the amount of food available by begging or rummaging through garbage makes hunting not necessary, but I couldn't find any definitive answers online.

Given enough time, could stray dogs regain their instinct to hunt in packs? Would the absence of food in the form of human waste encourage a coming together in packs? Why are stray dogs so often alone? Any info would be helpful. I am just curious.

  • Is there a universal symbol for language?

I'm working on a website that's aimed at people all over the world who speak many different languages. I wrote the whole thing in English and put a Google Translate button at the bottom of the site, but until they hit that button, the site is in English. Currently the text just says "Translate".

Can you think of some image (or text) I could replace "Translate" with that is more or less universal? I would like to avoid having to say "Translate" in a hundred different languages with one button.

    Or some other solution perhaps?

  • Can I get both a bachelor of arts and of science in the same degree?

I'm on track to meet the requirements for both a bachelor of arts and of science. Can I get them in the same degree?

  • Is there any way to insure my belongings in the event of theft internationally?

I've taken a look at some traveler's insurance, but none of the policies seem to do exactly what I want. I have been robbed multiple times while abroad and obviously it's always a pretty big financial burden. I'm going to be in Mexico City in a few weeks and will be staying in a pretty cheap hotel with a laptop, iPad, iPhone, passport etc.. Is there any way to financially protect myself in case any of that gets stolen?

  • Do you have any suggested audio books for an International Politics/Pre-Law Student?

I feel like I could be making better use of my time (maybe I should start by getting off this site). I probably have between three and four hours of time each day with which I don't have to be so focused on the task at hand that I couldn't also listen to informative audio book.

I'm probably going into International Politics or International law, but would be willing to use that time on anything that could give me a better understanding if that whole world.

    Any suggestions are appreciated!

  • How do I find margin of error percent given distance?

I don't think my question was very clear, but basically, I am trying to find n, given:

    n = p(1-p)((z_alpha/2)/E)^2

However, up until now, I have been given E or margin of error as a percent. It's now represented by a number of millimeters. How do I find the percent to plug into the above formula? Would it be E/mean or E/Standard Deviation?

  • How exactly do promoted posts work?

I was just given for the first time the option to promote my posts, but I'm a little confused on who and how many people will see them. From facebook: "Promoting a post doesn’t change who can see it. Promoting moves the post higher in News Feed so the people you shared it with are likely to see it."

Which seems to indicate that only current fans will see even a promoted post, but I only have 105 fans, yet when I click promote, it says estimated reach is between 1.4k and 2.6k, so can someone help me make some sense of that?

If I pay to "promote", who will see the post and how many people?

  • How to get word out about my new Facebook page?

I'm sure this question has been asked a thousand times, but I was hoping for some advice maybe more specific to my niche. Here's the page: https://www.facebook.com/WhatAmIDoingOnline

I'm currently entering every new fan of the page into a drawing for a $50 Amazon Gift card, but the only way I've been able to get word out about THAT are facebook ads which have run up my budget pretty quickly. Any cool ideas?
