On average how far back can a retail company go on a background check?

Update:

I have a misdemeanor from 17 years ago. Another retailer I applied to did a 10 year background check but I don't know if that's the case with most retailers.

    I've had companies go all the way back to the time I was in high school, which was 25 years ago.

    Most of them go back 10 years.

    They can go back to your birth but few would as it would be cost prohibitive. Most just do a criminal background, DMV and credit check.
