The Indians were never united and the Indians stayed fragmented for a long time.

India didn't have the spare manpower for large numbers of people to become scientists and the philosophy is not one of innovation. Hindu philosophy is one of acceptance. A quest to be at peace with the world. That's not a great incentive to build a bigger cannon or a steamship or even a washing machine. Instead India long focused on less material sciences

When the British came to India they saw India a broken nation that was not united. That is how the British were able to defeat them one by one.

They also believed and used the caste system for a very long time. Another factor was the invasions over the century by Muslims and Europeans kept them pre-occupied. With survival rather than advancement and the constant bickering left India too divided to create more advanced technologies.

Indians never taught the Chinese religion, martial arts, mathematics or astronomy.

China's first religion was founded at the beginning of the Shang Dynasty, in the 18th century BC, predating Buddhism by 1300 years and possibly Hinduism.

China's first documentation of martial arts is very detailed and recorded in 500bc, and even explains the neigong internal and Weigong external styles.

Chinese mathematics were also found in the Shang Dynasty, some numbers even predating certain mathematics found in the Vedas.

And the earliest astronomy evidence in China is from about 5000bc, when stones in a grave yard appear to show evidence of certain stars aligning.
