What is the word for overly emotional to the extent of it being meaningless?

It is a term often used in literature to denote something is so saturated in emotion that it is not sincere.

    Sappy perhaps? "That movie was so sappy I could not take it seriously" You could also use melodramatic.

    The urban legend website Snopes uses the word glurge, "Stories, often sent by email, that are supposed to be true and uplifting, but which are often fabricated and sentimental."
