If you're going it alone on a DIY repair project, pay attention to the instructions on the packages of shingles - pretty decent roofing 101.

if you're starting with a crew, for a job, show up early, 'ask questions, and have a suitable tool belt.

Many of us have done it with a hammer & nails. Using a compressor and an air nailer is way faster, but best to get acquainted with it while still on the ground.

Either way, stay safe. Wear shoes with some good traction, like running shoes or cross-trainers. Watch for power lines when placing ladders. Always know where the roof edge is, as you do not want to fall off even if it's "only" eight feet down. If you drop a tool, do not just lunge for it, or you may go sliding down, too. If it's a hot day, don't forget to hydrate before you get stupid. But if by yourself, or just with friends, avoid the beer until day's end.

Longhaired libertarian is right I just wanted to put my 2 cents in. You can walk a pitched roof, most carpenters can walk an 8/12 pitch without support. Just one word of advice, don't go too steep on your roof because the steeper your roof the more wasted space you have. Not to mention the steeper the roof the more the carpenters will charge. You want to pick a pitch that is proportionate with the width of your house. Start at a 6/12 pitch and go up from there until you find one that looks good

Hard on your body, but other then that a very good trade to have under your belt. Ask about insurance first chance you get if your working for a company and if not see about getting a policy of your own, just in case. Get steel toed boots and sturdy work pants and dress for the weather, its fast paced up there, cause the sooner you get one job in you can start another. Bring your own lunch and not some pb&j with a koolaid package. Hard labor deserves protein, good choice a baked chicken breast, side of potatoes and green beans, drink water, protein drink, sweet tea or whatever through the day. Ask guestions,be polite to the owners and don't bullshit around in the yard. You'll do fine!

Don't fall off. Seriously. Some roofing companies are run by cowboys and don't follow what safety rules there are. New workers are most at risk from industrial accidents because they are scared to speak up or ask for advice, and they don't have the experience. Make sure you have the right boots, harness, whatever and that they fit and you know how to use them properly.

    How Hard Is Roofing

You can do it if you have good knowledge of roofing. But still, i'll suggest you to take help of the roofing experts. They will charge for their services but they will do their best with full perfection and your roof will last longer. Still, if you really wanna try then go ahead, do in depth research and be confident.

    Good Luck!

STAY OFF THE DAMN ROOF AMATEUR ! ! No disrespect but this is a job really best left to the pro’s . Even a small roof is a long way down. I know . I admire your desire to do it yourselve and save $$$ besides if you miss a rung on that ladder with a square of shingles on your shoulder its hurting time.

I knew a roofer who worked for someone for two years. He fell off the roof. Turns out the company was uninsured, unlicensed, cash under the table off Craigslist.

Broke his pelvis. No health insurance either. Ruined him and his family financially.

Super hard work. Have to be young and strong.

Physically it can be hard work but it is hardly rocket science. I assume you are working for someone who knows what they are doing and can tell you what to do. Just work hard, listen, and do what you are told and you'll be fine.
