adding and subtracting polynomials?

I have a test tomarow. Please help me understand. Maybe writting clear steps like 1. 2. And 3. Thank you. An example problem 3x^3 +4+x^3-10 and we are not aloud to use caucluators.

    Step 1: Group like terms. For 3x^3+4+x^3-10, like terms would be the x^3's and constants. We group and get (3x^3+x^3)+(4-10). We can do this because of the communicative and associative properties of addition.

    Step 2: Simplify to get 4x^3-6

    That's about it!
