How long do you hold on to a fairly nice gift you have 'zero' interest in? Would it be wrong to sell it at some point?

In some cases you can sell it, donate it, or re-gift it. If a close friend or family member gave it to you, especially if they made it by hand for you, you should keep it, although you can store it away most of the time.
