Can you understand Car insurance?

Update:

What do they all mean? I don't fit any of the categories:

Social only (SD&P) - if you never use the car to drive to work.

Social and commuting to a single place of work/study (SDP&C) - if you drive to and from a single place of work/study and no other business travel takes place.

Business use by the policy holder - if you need to travel on work related business away from your single place of work.

Business use by the policyholder's spouse

Update 2:

I use the car 90% private and 10% business. my son & wife also uses it occasionally privately.

Update 3:

I use the car 90% private and 10% business. my son & wife also uses it occasionally privately.

If you use your car to generate income, whether that be delivering a product or anything you are paid for, you will need commercial insurance.

It can be a nightmare trying to separate casual from business use to set the risk for insurance and to know what miles are tax deductible for tax purposes.

Find a good local agent that offers a commercial policy, and have a discussion with that person to get your questions answered.

Social only - You drive the car to the grocery store to go shopping. You drive it to drop off the kids at their friend's house for a birthday party. You drive it to Grandma and Grandpa's for Christmas. And any other trips similar to this.

Commuting - You drive it to work, and it sits parked in the parking lot at work all day until work is done, then you drive it home.

Business use - You drive the car to client sites for meetings, and other functions during your normal work day.

Combine this any way you need to for your use of the car. You drive it to work and park it there all day, and then drive the family to Grandma and Grandpa's, it's social and commuting. You drive it for work (business) and your wife drives it to go shopping, it sounds like it's social and business use.

If your wife is the policy holder, then select "Business use by the policyholder's spouse".
