Is butter okay to use after it has been at room temperature for a day or so?

This is a stick of butter in an unopened paper (not foil) wrapper. Is it still good, or has it turned rancid or sour or watever?

Please explain why; don't just say Yes or No.

Thanks!

Update:

Thanks, great replies so far!

I meant to say that it's unsalted butter.

Since your replies say it's okay, I've used it. I'm making buckeyes (balls of peanut butter, butter, and confectioner's sugar coated in chocolate).

Butter can safely stay unrefrigerated for weeks. The butter I used yesterday and the day before has been out of the fridge for at least 3 weeks now. It's fine. So am I. If it grows mold, then it isn't safe any more. I think I've seen butter grow mold once in 50 years or so. Why does it keep? It doesn't have much moisture in it. Bacteria and so on need moisture to grow. It usually has salt and salt is a preservative. That was the original reason salt was used in butter, before there were refrigerators. Unsalted butter will not keep as long as salted butter, whether in the fridge or out of it. The main problem with keeping butter out of the fridge is if it's too warm and separates. Even then, it's still safe to eat though the texture suffers. It might go rancid, which is what happens to fats that are kept too long, but rancidity is more of a taste issue than a safety issue. Keeping butter uncovered is more of a problem, in the fridge or out of it. It doesn't spoil faster uncovered, but it tends to absorb odours from the air and from other food. Still safe, just doesn't taste as good as it could.

Yes it is ok. The reason is that butter is basically oil, more then likely canola oil as you have stated. Not at my restaurant but I am sure that you have visited a country restaurant that has butter sitting out on the table. That is just the same. All you need to do is what you did. What happens is the butter with heat has separated which the oil come o the top and the which in my world as a chef it is call clarifying. Just stir it up and put in the re fridge. Also us in the kitchen intentional melt butter (clarify) and us just the top oil part, even just it by stirring it to put in a lot of dishes. With all of this being said I hope that you can rest assure that it is very eatable. Enjoy have a great day!

I am pretty sure your butter is O.K. to use even if left at room temperature for 2 or 3 days. I usually leave my butter out in a plastic butter dish for 3 or 4 days and it is usually gone by then.

Butter can be left out of the refridgerator for weeks at a time and be just fine. Some people actually prefer there butter to be room temperature!

It is perfectly safe to use even after a month in the butter bowl! It goes rancid only after it has sat there for a month or two. But it is still good for baking even then. doesn't taste too good on toast or biscuits!

I keep my butter, a pound at a time in a butter bowl. This way it is soft and ready to spread any time we get ready to eat.

The other day I thought the girls were going to make cookies after dinner so I left out a pound of cream cheese and 2 pounds of butter to be soft and ready to use. It is still in the mixing bowl but has been set back into the fridge til I am ready to make those cookies then I will take it out the night before!

You can keep butter at room temperature. For most baking recipes, you are supposed to keep the butter at room temperature.

Butter's fine to be left out for a short time.In fact on some archeological digs they've found big lumps of centuries old butter buried in the ground(that's one of the ways they'd store it in some cultures) and eventually after some scraping they find edible butter on the inside.

My grandmother kept butter in a cupboard in a covered crystal butter dish, never in the icebox. It was always soft so it was not impossible to spread. But she used butter a lot more than people do now. It wasn't healthy. But it was never there long enough to spoil. Always new butter was "put up" within a few days.

it is alright as long as it is not rancid and has discoloration or a strong smell- and that is not going to happen from sitting out at room temperature for a few days or not even a week.
