500 kb/s, is my computer lying?
It says that it is downloading at 500 kb/s, but the megabytes that are supposed to be downloaded aren't there, is the speed just an estimate?

There are many sites that will check your broadband speed. One is
speedtest.net
Remember that broadband speed in in bits, but file sizes are in bytes.
There are 8 bits in one byte so if you have a broadband speed of 1 Mb/s then a 1 Mbyte file will take 8 seconds.
