Isn't Steins;Gate just really well done John Titor fan fiction?

It has some the same plot points of the internet hoax. The whole needing and IBM 5100 to read computer code the save the future in 2036. It even has John Titor, but as a Japanese girl. The whole multiple and divergent timeline thing also. It's basically Titor fan fiction with a compelling story and great characters. I think it's a superior story than the original Titor hoax.

I wouldn't call it fan fiction, but Steins;Gate does take several major points, dates, and facts from the John Titor posts and works them into the story. John Titor was a pretty prominent figure (with regards to "time travel" in any case) after all, so it would make sense to have had references to Titor in a time travel series.

The whole thing with multiple branching timelines and alternate universes are actual real-life theories proposed by real physicists, not something John Titor thought up. In any case, "John Titor" was simply a character in Steins;Gate, but the series itself wasn't necessarily based on the hoax, even though it did draw elements from it.

On a broad note, Steins;Gate is only one part of the overall Science Adventure visual novel series by 5bp/Nitroplus, the others being Chaos;Head and Robotics;Notes which, as far as I know, have no real-life basis for their plots (other than references to more real-life scientific theories).

John Titor was a person who posted on the Coast to Coast message boards in 2000 claiming to come from the year 2036. Strangely enough a lot of people believed him. Well I guess that makes sense since Coast to Coast is radio show for conspiracy nut jobs.
