Why are people told to be themself, when their self isn't such a well being?

I don't mean this to be offensive or mean in any way. This question just popped up in my head. Like once there was this very nice girl who was only being very nice because she wanted people to think of her highly (so she was being selfish and originally wasn't the nicest). And I'm sure you guys can come up with more examples along that line. But why is this?

Because in general, it's a good thing. People don't say that to psychopaths, but usually to people who say things like "I want to change my name", "I hate being [name a race]. How can I be more white?", or trolls who say "I'm 5'8" and 120 lbs. Why am I so damn fat?"
