Why is it OK to call alcoholism a disease, but not homosexuality? Being an addict is a choice, but we're treat these people like victims...?

...with a medical condition. Political correctness removed homosexual from the DSM as being a mental disease. But choosing to drink to excess or take drugs... "science" says these people have a medical problem.

Abstinence from both activities is the cure from both of them.

What is your argument? Sexual orientation is an innate instinct for everyone, so hardly does it relate to any medical condition. Alcoholism is like any other addiction, stemming from the complex way our minds react to many things in life when we resort to feeding a depression or guilt, or when we seek something to dull the reality of what irks us. It is indeed a medical condition because it is a neurological issue, where the brain is unable to deal with whatever problems arise in life and so the individual consciously seeks out something to comfort them. Alcohol does that very well because it dulls many of the human senses. It is a choice where as being born homosexual is not. But once someone makes that choice to drink alcohol in excess and it becomes an addiction, it does become a medical issue, if only the medical authorities had a clue how to treat it. Science has nothing to do with it. Logic, reason and rational thought is all anyone needs to understand the reality of how nature works, but then along side all that, every human should have compassion, tolerance and go to some lengths to limit their own ignorance. Sadly, many think that just because their own instincts feel natural to them and they are not addicted to anything, others born differently or who succumb to the problems of life are lesser mortals.

Maybe that is as much a medical condition.

So... where in this internally contradictory rant does your position lie?

That both homosexuality and alcoholism should be considered diseases..... or that neither should? Because right now your "question" simply reads as an insight into the mind of a highly confused person.

It's very difficult to answer an internally contradictory question.

They are not addicts or alcoholics, fool. And no science I've ever read implies otherwise unless it comes from some weird fundie organisation. Most believe people are born with that orientation. Why would it be a mental disease if they are happy with their life, don't harm anyone and are fully productive members of society (as the vast majority are.)

Whether you want to call alcoholism a disease or not, it's irrelevant. What is relevant is that it is possible for an alcoholic to stop drinking. It is not possible for a gay person to become straight, contrary to what some people might believe. Also, people are not born alcoholics. Gay people are born gay.

Being homosexual does not hurt anyone, require any treatment, or affect your health and wellbeing an any way.

Alcoholism kills people and ruins lives.

Once you are addicted to something, you are not acting by choice - you have been poisoned.

Is the difference *really* that hard for you to see?

What an absurd thing to say. To try and compare homosexuality with alcoholism?? People are not born alcoholics. There are no rehabs for gay people no what you bigots say.

We are all born with our sexuality in place.

It is not a disease : We play the cards that we were dealt whether Heterosexual, Bi-sexual or Asexual.

Bi-sexual is the best because it give one twice the chance of getting a date on a Saturday night...(Woody Allen)

It is sexual orientation. Homosexuality means you are attracted to the same sex. You could call religious paranoia a mental illness, oh wait it is.

If you think homosexuality is a mental problem then you are clearly insane.
