How to get him in a nursing home? Possible signs of dementia?

My boyfriend's dad is in his 70's. He lives alone in an apartment for senior citizens. He was in the hospital in December and they found out he has COPD/congestive heart failure/and bad lungs. (He is a very heavy chain smoker). When the family asked about putting him in a nursing home since nobody is able to stay with him, they were told he wasn't bad enough to go to a nursing home or didn't meet the requirements at the time. They sent him home with oxygen and he was told to use it all the time. We go visit him from time to time and he barely uses his oxygen and even smokes in the next room. He has stopped taking care of his hygiene as well, and he repeats himself a LOT. Asks questions that we answered just 10 minutes before. Won't pay any of his bills, lies about things, can't take a joke.. Other tenants in the complex have said they've heard him fall more than once...etc. We aren't sure if he's acting this way due to lack of oxygen (since he won't use it) or if it's dementia or something similar..or if he's just being stubborn.. My boyfriend called the hospital but they wouldn't talk to him about anything because it's confidential I guess. The kids are wanting to put him in a nursing home for everyone's sake. (They're unable to drive an hour to his place everyday to check on him and they're afraid they'll show up one day to find him lying on the floor). How can they get him in a nursing home without the hospital doing it? Is that possible?

You can not force someone into a nursing home against their will unless you have taken over some type of guardianship of that person due to their inability to take care of themselves. Nursing homes are not free, and it is expensive to stay there - often $130 - $200 per day depending on your area. Medicare will cover a skilled stay for a limited time - when someone needs skilled medical monitoring and therapy - but not a residential stay for someone needing supervision or basic assistance. So you may be able to get him into a nursing home, but you will have to pay for it.

There are many options to having someone remain at home. There are home care agencies available, and the physician may be comfortable ordering home health services to evaluate him. If he is having frequent falls and is not able to handle his own medications (oxygen being considered a medication in this instance) then he would probably qualify for services, depending on his level of mobility. Home health services provided by a certified agency are also covered by Medicare. However, supervision, companionship, etc are not skilled and not covered by Medicare.

There are private services that provide caregivers when someone needs basic care - help with housework, help with taking medications correctly, supervision for safety. You can pay privately for someone to be in the home with him either for a few hours or for full days if necessary.

If the gentleman needs oxygen and is not using it, that will definitely affect his cognition especially over time. It also increases his risk of falls and injury, and makes him more likely to have additional complications. He needs to be seen regularly by his own physician, and all this needs to be discussed. A physician involved now could help him remain healthy in his own place, instead of allowing a sufficient decline that he winds up in the hospital again. There are basic questions to ask. Why is he not using his oxygen? What are his feelings about his own health and status? Is he aware of having any difficulty? How is his judgment about his own safety? His regular doc can help assess those areas and find ways to help.

Basically, a nursing home is the most intense level of care, with the highest cost. You don't want to go straight there unless other options have been exhausted. Many people spend every last cent paying for nursing home care and then wind up on Medicaid. Get the man to his doctor, and discuss your care options before you wind up with a crisis. Good luck.

They should be able to locate a Assisted Living Facility that will take care of him but may need to help with the cost if his social security does not fully cover it. Good Luck

They will need to take him to court and get him declared incompetent. This will be expensive and time consuming.

He can go into assisted living. There are no "requirements" for this other than paying the bills.

you are not supposed to smoke at all in a house using oxygen - there could be an explosion - you might have to get a power of attorney for medical purposes and declare him incompetent or something - see a lawyer
