I use what I have and make soup.
When you have money to spend on food, spend it wisely on stuff that lasts a long time and is both healthy and cheap, like oatmeal, dried beans and eggs, and on ingredients for cooking your own meals, like flour, baking powder and oil. Learn how to make what you like to eat.
If I had leftover macaroni and cheese, I would add some peas or cut up hot dog(or both) to it, to make it more substantial, and I like pineapple chunks with sliced banana. Frozen peas, hot dogs and bananas are all cheap foods. If I wanted better nutrition, I would use canned tuna instead of the hot dog. But there is nothing wrong with mac and cheese and pineapple, if that is what you have.
