Is it possible to get a new key for a used car - 2002 foreign?

I am unable to locate the key and wonder if is it possible or do I need to actually take to a dealer and get a new ignition switch.

You didn't state the make and model.

But generally you can visit a main dealer with proof of vehicle ownership and proof of ID along with the VIN number and they can order the correct key for the car, providing the ignition barrel has never been changed for a different one.

You then get a key which fits the ignition, and you then have to get the car to a main dealer or to a suitably-equipped auto-electrician or automotive locksmith to get the chip in the key programmed to the immobiliser. Some makes and models have ways for owners to do that themselves without the need to visit a dealer.

I was a car dealer and lost ALL my keys. Paid a locksmith about $20 per car to make new cars for all of them.
