Its that "follow your dreams" problem again.?
It seems to be the time for young people to decide what they want to do after high school. Some of them have asked questions about going to the top music college in the US and it is quite obvious that they don't have even the smallest chance of getting a place but have been told to follow their dreams.
Is this really fair on them to have their dreams completely destroyed?

If being told no "destroys" their dream, it wasn't a dream in the first place. In fact, failure serves as a good test as to whether this truly is something you were born to do (in which case you pick yourself up and keep going). If it's a passing phase and not a true dream, you'd find a new dream.

They can still follow their dreams, the path might be a little more difficult though. There are tons of amazing musicians that have never gone to any fancy universities. I believe you can even go to a community college first or perhaps a less popular music school and get a degree before transferring to the university of your choice. So even if that person has failed to get in their university straight from high school they could just transfer after earning a degree somewhere else.

Telling someone, "Don't even try, you have no chance" is more apt to destroy their dream than encouraging them to pursue it. If they fail, at least they gave it a shot. If they never even try, their dream is destroyed before it was ever attempted. Who wants to go through life with regrets and "what ifs?"
