You do seem like a nice guy, and it's true that homosexuality is abnormal because the majority is straight and one hundred years ago (in America) it was considered to be disgusting and unnatural. It's sad that some places and people still think that way.

I think the problem here is with the word "normal," which is a very loaded word. Historically, most people in the USA have been white, but would you say that black, Asian, or Native American people are "not normal"? No, they just happen to be numerically in the minority. There are more women than men; are men "not normal"? There are more straight people than gay; but are gay people "not normal"? No, they are numerically in the minority, that's all.

So if you'll avoid terms like "normal" and "abnormal," which are easily heard as being insulting no matter how you intend them, you'll probably get your actual feelings across better and be less likely to be labeled a homophobe.
