Why do people say some words completely wrong?

Question

This drives me crazy sometimes...like Noo-Q-ler for Nuclear (only one U in there), or Real-IT-or for Realtor (no i in there at all), there's a radio ad for a company with Etcetera in their name, and the singer clearly says EK-set-ra, the T comes before the C and there's no K sound in there...
Why do they no longer correct stuff like this in school?  I remember distinct discussions about how we didn't want to sound like idiots so we'd best learn the correct pronunciation and useage of our words....

Oh come join my club!  This is one reason I am Grumpier Old Woman.  Lousy spelling, lousy pronunciation, lousy grammar.  My favourite 'love to hate' at the moment is 'I could of', instead of 'I could have or could've'.

In a language that pronounces Worcester as Wooster I hardly think those are egregious errors. I probably don't pronounce you-uns right and I'm afraid if I go to Missouri or Louisville I will be mocked for my pronunciation of their home land.

Here in the Southwest US we have rodeos (RODE -ee-ohs). It is an American word that is spelled exactly like the  Spanish rodeo (ro-DAY-o') and means the same. No red-blooded American cowboy ever got his ribs busted up in no ro-DAY-o', I tell you what! It's all about dialect.

It depends on where the person grew up. For me Nuclear is (New-cle-er OR New-Qya-ler) Realtor is (Re-al-ter) and Etcetera is (Ex-et-er-a). I learned to speak in both California and Montana, so it really is different for everyone. It is like how some people say Creek as (creak and some as crick) or even Soda and Pop.

I don't think they're saying it wrong, I think you're " reading" it wrong. You can't read " slang words" or abbreviated" words?
