Now if you are looking for a laptop for your 14 year old grandson then buy something that can convenience you and your grandson. Now since your grandson wants to be able to skype, keep in touch with his friends, and play similar games like minecraft, I suggest getting a cheaper laptop than getting a gaming laptop due to him being 14 and I do not know what your preferences are in terms of cost and your grandson's opinion. In my opinion, you should get your son a laptop that just has the basic needs such as an intel core, graphics card that is decent, and a good amount of ram but not too much since he is only 14 years old. Now if you think your grandson is going to go on and play pc games a lot, I suggest getting the more expensive laptop. Now I use a Aspire v15 V3-572G-54L9 which is a $650 laptop with just the basics. So no microsoft or other programs are installed. But this is a hybrid laptop meaning it is for casual gaming and everyday life use in which your grandson seems to be. But I suggest getting a laptop that is solid and can last years. I made a mistake on buying a laptop without thinking about it and I deeply regret it. So my overall sugestion is to buy your grandson as decent laptop like I did. But you should research about many laptops that are convenient for price and quality. :)

I recommend any type of Windows 7 laptop if he is at least slightly computer knowledgeable, and Windows 8 if he doesn't know squat either. Personally I would say to not get a Mac. I won't go into as much detail, since understanding it takes some knowledge, but Mac doesn't support as many games as Windows. Windows is especially made for handling games. Any type works, but I use hp Windows 7.

any laptop can let you go on skype/facebook. just make sure you get a laptop with a webcam so that he can skype. And just ask the salesman that you want a laptop designed for games. At his age, it might also be useful to get a computer that is also good for school work. Your grandson will be entering high school. He will need a computer. It would be best if that laptop came along free with microsoft word which is used for typing up documents.

The thing you want to look for in particular is which graphics chipset it has. You want one with an nVidia or AMD Radeon. Intel will not suffice for gaming. If you go to a store like Microcenter or Best Buy just tell them he will be doing some gaming and they should know what you need.

A Macbook Air. Its is very portable, light, good design, last ALOT long (5+ years), and Apple makes the hardware and software so if you have a problem, they don't send you company to company to see where your problem is from. It runs Minecraft amazingly but it might get a bit hot.
