Can a white American visit Mexico safely?
My fiance's family is from Mexico and we want to go to the Yucatan penninsula and aztec ruins for our honeymoon however, Cartels and stuff scare me.
I know the news makes it look more dangerous and i've heard that it is safer than you would imagine but
if I wanted to go to the coastline, scubadive in yucaton, and check out old ruins and forests how safe would it be?
P.S. I am a white american so I would be very easy to spot in a crowd.

Mexico City (Ciudad de México) may be the capital of Mexico and an amazing city surrounded by great mountain ranges. To see this town you can select the very best solution hotelbye . The city's area is definitely breathtaking. Two superb snow-covered volcanoes, Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl, tower over it with their more of 5,000 meters. Mexico City also preserves numerous pointers of their past and those are things that entice the tourists. The beating center of Mexico City is Zócalo - the Plaza de la Constitución (Constitution Square) - where in fact the country's first constitution was proclaimed in 1813 and now could be one of the most visited host to Mexico City since it's among the world's greatest squares. In Mexico City you can also visit: the National Palace, the Metropolitan Cathedral and the Templo Mayor.

Hello, I don't know if is too late to write you but I just came from mexico last week, I was living and traveling 5 months and I am white (not gringa, but doesn't metter) At Yucatan and Quintana Roo you will find a hundreads of American tourists and its very safe, everything is dedicated to tourism, they earning a money on you, nobody willtouch you or even look at you. Cartels are everywhere, I was even living in the industrial place where white ppl don't exist and nothin happened to me. You must know one thing Cartels are interesting in rich Mexican ppl, not in tourists (its a deal between them and government), if they fight they fight with the other cartels, and they kidnap a members of veeery rich mex families, about they know they can pay out... Go, enjoy, mexico is not just maya Riviera, each state is diferent and amazing, and my advice is don't do drugs there and everything will be fine...

Parts of Mexico are very safe, but remember this, it is a poor country (money wise) and the seem to look at all Americans as rich. (Even if your not. And (almost) every 30mins someone is kidnapped and held for ransom.(no joke) just be careful, Mexico is still a very beautiful place to visit. Enjoy.!!

Yes, is safe! Just keep in mind the rule of thumb, don't do things you wouldn't do here in the states.
Stay in well populated area, and don't wander alone.
Cancun is a widely visited city in Mexico, so chances are you'll bump into other Americans while there.
You'll be fine, just practice common sense!

It is completely safe, I am Mexican but live in the U.S., I have visited Yucatan peninsula a lot of times and since it is a tourist place it is not common to be a victim because people want more tourists to come and it is not convenient for people to talk bad about a tourist place.
Hope it helped :)

hello, Merida Yucatan is the safest of all mexico city, what you see in the news is as if we saw it here in another country, in Merida security is impressive and there are many facilities for foreigners like you, I recommend you come to the north of the city of Merida which is the best and is only 10 minutes from the beautiful port of progress, if you have any further questions will gladly resolve it.

15 Million people arrived in Cancun. It is Not the media blowing things out of proportion , it is you. Cartel violence has nothing to do with tourism.
Gangs are everywhere and are likely in your city
