I sold my car to my mechanic as it wasn't worth repairing, he told me to just sign the Reg document as he knew how to fill it out to declare it SORN. I had a letter from the motor insurance database to say if I didn't insure this car immediately I'd be fined. I contacted mechanic and he apologised and said he'd get on to it. I then get a fine from the DVLA, I told mechanic again. After a week or so I get a tax refund from DVLA, which I copied and sent to them along with a letter explaining what had happened, I also attached a copy of my insurance certificate which proved by car would have been insured until October had I not sold it.
I heard nothing and have just received a final frikking notice.
I called the DVLA insurance department and explained this, I was told my only options were to pay the fine or appeal, I told him I'd already appealed it and had not heard anything back, he repeated that that was my only option.
Is there anything I can do? I'm worried if I appeal again, the next thing I'll get is a court summons.

They are doing a difficult job under extreme pressure both from Customers and Government.
Whenever I've dealt with them they have been both polite and helpful, but maybe they give out similar to what they receive.
But as with any job; when they go home I expect they switch off just like any other office worker.
Update.
You were responsible to get the person you sold the vehicle to to fill in his name and address on the V5.
You were then responsible to make sure you gave him the new keeper supplement.
It was also your responsibly to make sure YOU informed the DVLA that you no longer owned the vehicle by returning the V5 to them.
If you neglect your responsibilities it no use crying about the consequences afterwards. The correct procedure to follow is CLEARLY laid out on the back of the V5. It was your responsibility to read it and comply.

You are required to notify DVLA of any change of ownership or if you SORN the car.
Yes they do care and will chase you for the fine.
