to be felt 'below' by a midwife/nurse after conception - which I am not - isn't it best just to avoid the whole thing? Intimacy, relationships?

If you don't want doctors touching your vagina, then having a baby is not for you. That doesn't mean you can't be intimate and have relationships, that just means you shouldn't get pregnant. There are plenty of men who don't want kids who would willingly get a vasectomy to make sure you never have kids.
There would still be the risk of disease though. If you don't get pap smears done you are risking your health.
