Update:

Clarence Thomas recently claimed that dignity is inherent and can not be taken away or damaged by things like unjust internment or outright enslavement. What is the kind of dignity he is talking about good for?

Dignity is the internalization of ones standing as a moral and ethical person (or worth) in society.

It's good for picking yourself up off the floor. It's good for getting yourself out of bed in the morning. It's good for stepping outside and meeting the world.

It's actually about the only thing that really does have value. Everything else just comes and goes like flotsam and jetsam.

$15 at the nearest pawn shop.

I suppose he means that naturally everyone is dignified. No one's unworthy of being respected just cuz they had the bad luck to be enslaved and encroached.

It is of substantial value in helping one feel that one/ one`s life has its own intrinsic worth.

Sometimes it is work to retain. maintain/ revive it and that work is part of dignifying oneself and honouring life.
