As an employee, how do I approach the manager of a department about cross training into his department?

Update:

I am a hospital employee. I am looking to cross train to another department for career advancement. My current position is somewhat related to that occupation so, I do have the basic skills. I am not sure what to say or even how to approach that department manager. Any suggestions?

I manage a facility where we exchange employees for various reasons. You would first talk to your own supervisor and have them help you make the change.

If it's a bad situation, talk to the other manager, say you want to come over and you 'haven't talked to your own supervisor.'

Communicate with your department management first, absolutely. Otherwise you'll put the other department in a bad spot.

You approach your own manager or supervisor. You don't approach someone you don't work for.
