How to clean a heavily soiled carpet?

My living room carpet has been heavily soiled mostly by a dog peeing/pooping on the carpet (the last owners lied about potty training him and I have since given him up to someone with the time and know-how to train him). The carpet doesn t really smell or anything but it feels grimy and gross when walking on it. I borrowed a steam cleaner thing but it hasn t helped as much as I want. Any tips on how to clean it better?

I'll bet it does indeed smell--maybe you're just used to it. There are enzyme cleaners at the pet store that will remove MOST of that residue, and you may have to use them more than once. The urine and residue may be in the carpet pad, as well--if you are still feeling like it's not clean, you may not be ABLE to get it clean with anything you can buy over the counter. You'll need a professional to treat and clean the carpeting. Try the enzyme cleaners first--but I'm betting that if it's bad enough to FEEL gross, it is pretty bad and you're going to need that pro.
