Can an indoor cat become an outdoor cat?

We have a cat that is about one and a half and we have to give him up because our new apartment doesn't allow cats. If we can't find a home, we'll have to take him to my parents house. He would have to be an outdoor cat though. Would he be able to transition to living outside?

Most cats make that transition just fine. He may be a little timid the first few days.

One thing I have found, once a cat is used to being outdoors they are not happy if kept indoors for more than a day or two; but moving to being outdoors is not usually a problem.

It's cruel to put an inside cat out. Every state has cruel animal acts and you must provide food, water and shelter for any pet that you have, or you could be fined and/or serve time in jail.

Any cat that has lived indoors does not know how to survive outside. Too many dangers such as being hit by a car, killed by another animal or running away and starving to death. If your mom can't keep him inside and you can't find a good home for him, take him to a no kill shelter.

My cat my originally an indoor cat, but we moved and now he goes in and out as he pleases. Just takes time to teach him the boundaries outside

A cat living outside is pointless, and it would be very cruel to your cat,it would wonder what the hell it had done to be punished like this, what about rain, snow, the cold? find someone who can keep in inside or take it to a shelter.
