social security's official website is ssa.gov. I can't imagine why it is you think that it isn't.

The US government controls everything in the .gov domain. Scammers cannot put up phony .gov sites. What they can do is hijack individual domain servers here and there, but there would be no point in point in putting up a fake URL in a hijacked domain.
I loaded www.ssa.gov and it looked to be a legitimate US government website. I loaded www.socialsecurity.gov, and it looks the same as ssa.gov. It would not surprise me if the government put up more than one portal to the same data.
