Mc Donalds - £100 parking fine?
A recent TV program here in the UK brought news of a family of five being charged £100 for staying in the Mc Donalds car park for 1 hour and 11 minutes.
This is despite the fact that the family were actually in Mc Donalds and spending quite a bit of money.
McDonalds employ a car parking company to scan vehicle number plates and to impose a fine through the post if their customers have overstayed !
Kind of wonder if McDonalds employ this tactic in the USA / Canada or any other countries.

I was issued with a £75 fixed penalty today for flicking a cigarette butt onto the floor. Yes, I was loutish and deserve some sort of penalty, but £75? I would agree with a £25 fine for me doing that or even £35 but £75 is way over the top, and I also picked it up on request and didn't give the enforcement officer any grief.
A small fine would put people off parking wrongly or dropping litter, the amounts they charge is simply greed. There are other stories of people having till receipts blow out of their hands and got fines, not given a chance to pick it up or anything. OK mine wasn't an accident but it would be more frustrating if it was, and in some cases it has been.
To ensure they always collect the money, there is no appeals process, they say use the courts as an appeals process, but really, who wants to go through the courts given how slow they are and you still might get a conviction at the end of it - and even more costs.

The company reduced the fine to £50. One of the group got there 20 minutes before the others and stayed over the time so he deserves the fine. People use these car parks to go to other stores and then genuine customers can't find a place to park so they have to do something to stop it. The signs are big enough in their car parks. I don't use McDonalds, but I can see their point.

You asked if McDonalds employ these tactics in other countries. I have not heard of such from the McDonalds resturants in my area of the US. Once in awhile one may see a McDonalds that is in the same location as a movie cinema or other shops, that share the same parking lot, they will put out reserved signs with thier shop name on the spaces infront of thier shops. But I have never seen any signs as such at a McDonalds here in the Southwest US. Theu may do it on the East Coast where the parking is more limited.

Right. A 'fast food' diner. One where they don't use plates, and which runs many of its outlets by pushing food straight out of their serving hatch and through a car window. These people spent 1 hour and 11 minutes in there?

I never pay private parking fines, if they're from the council or police yes, if McDonalds gave me one, i would post it to their head-office along with one of my McPoo's
