If a $15 minimum wage is a good idea, why are the unions fighting for it are also looking to be exempted from it?

So they can take jobs from people that would be making $15 an hour... It's a power play on their part to make everyone join their union...

The exemption, or escape clause, would allow them greater strength in organizing workplaces. Unions can tell fast food chains, hotels, and hospitals that if they agree to union representation, their wage bill will be substantially lower. That will persuade employers to allow the unions to move in.

So if there is a collective bargaining agreement then they can be exempt from the 15.00 minimum wage hike that goes on over the next 5 years? OK sound good. Whatever. Now what are we going to do about the poisoned food, air, and water?

Unions are fighting for it because the purpose of a union is to support workers and/or contracts/collective bargaining. Economists disagree on the far reaching effects of a $15 / hour minimum wage, but a unions job isn't to mitigate the economy, its to safeguard the membership.

They are dishonest. They want to use their exception as a way of getting unions into places, "Unionize and you will be exempt from $15 minimum wage."

Simple! Many union contracts have a clause that provides that union wages are automatically increased whenever the minimum wage is increased.

Hiking the min. wage rate up to a LIVING wage works if there is also a cap on how much the max allows. Or else each person above a min. wage job will whine & complain that so and so is making almost as much as me and my job is 'harder' (usually not physically, they just have to know more) so then it goes up the chain and since there is no cap, soon EVERYTHING will be more expensive and once again, the min. wage won't be enough to live off of.

this CEO is actually humane to his employees and appreciates them:
