are portable air conditioners suppose to require draining every hour?

Update:

I have a new portable air conditioner and the built in tray gets full of water like every hour and it wont work unless i keep draining it. Is it suppose to produce this much water ? Im not using the dehumidifier mode

They can if you are in a very humid locale. I even have slight dripping here in the desert, so in a place like Georgia, it would be a continuous stream. You can modify the portable with a drain and a larger, removable container to catch the liquid so that you drain it less often. Another option would be to set it so that the drain is higher than the bottom of a window and run a drain hose out the window. (Put it on a stand, or table, etc.)

Portable air conditioners offer more flexibility than other window or through-the-wall air conditioners. Portable air conditioners have wheels and are compact (usually 2' - 3' tall).

yes that is normal , they are VERY wasteful of electricity because they expel expensive cooled air and draw more damp air into the room which is why there is so much water , only a through window/wall or split system will work economically, however you can usually attach a tube to drain the water continuously

There is no definitive fixed interval.

The higher the humidity, the more often draining will be necessary.

That is how air conditioning works.
