What should happen to the Kentucky clerk who refuses to issue marriage licenses to gay couples because of God's authority?

She should, first and foremost, be fired. Then she should be held in contempt and jailed. After that she can work for a church or some other useless institution that appreciates her level of delusion, ignorance and irrational fear.

I'll tell you what is going to happen that Persian is going to jail or will get fined or both. Most likely both but that is not right. No religion says gay marriage is ok except atheism because atheism has no rules. And tell me other wise because atheism is people getting away from rules and making their own up. Atheism is not even a religion it is an ideology just ask any atheist like the one's at the freedom from religion foundation who argue their religious beliefs are being trampled on by Christians when their name clearly states they have no religion to defend in the first place! No one has religious freedom to be gay. The courts decided it. It is wrong because it takes 10% of the nation and says it has no religion there for the first amendment high lights them more some how. when in reality the first amendment does not include them at all. Freedom OF religion not From it.

She's screwed. Once this became law it was obvious how this was all going to go down across the nation. I knew a few would hold out, but eventually they will fade away, and people will be elected to do this job instead. She is being encouraged by others who think like her to stand her ground and take the fines and jail time if need be. She will probably do it, then when she's gone from office and irrelevant, she will be forgotten, will have to deal with the fines and jail record for the rest of her life, and the people that are going "Yeah, we support you." will be no where in site. I think she thinks it's going to be all hunky dory in the end, and has no idea how it will probably go down in the end for her.

Contempt of Court.... in Federal Court..... is no joke.
I'd guess she will be spending a few days with some time to reflect on her idiocy and arrogance in the near future.
The SCOTUS remands the cases they reject.... so she is about to have a hearing before a judge who ruled against her, followed by a Cirtcuit Court that ruled against her, and the highest level of the judiciary deciding her case had no merit.... and then made her contempt for the authority of the Federal courts rather clear by defying even the Supreme Court.
Something tells me that this judge will feel that some form of punishment is in order..... otherwise the entire judicial branch loses credibility. Federal judges are lifetime appointed PRECISELY so that they can do what needs done without fear of political blowback even in backwoods Kentucky.

If he issues marriage licences to divorced people wishing to marry again he can be fired as Jesus was a bit more riled by divorce than he was about gay people and the clerks failure to hold up all of the aspects of his religion shows that his refusal was purely based on bigotry rather than religious belief.

She is a Democrat. She is an Elected County Official. She can't be fired. The people of Rowan County can petition for a Recall Election. Since a Democrat was already elected to the position, it wouldn't be difficult to get another Democrat elected to replace her. This is what should happen. This would be the proper and simplest solution. However, no such petition has been completed yet, which really makes this situation nothing more than a bunch of whining.

She should be given the option to quit or be fired. She s giving herself too much credit by saying she can t "sigh off" on it since she doesnt agree...her signature represents the courts, not her personal opinion, so get over that part. Her argument is no different than if a black man and white woman wanted to get married and the clerk refused, saying they don t "believe" in bi-racial marriage. The "bible card" has no place here. She s free to have that opinion, but she can t use it as an excuse to perform/not perform certain job duties. There would be complete chaos if we had to honor eveybody s personal opinion.

Nothing. The Supreme Court is simply full of bull****. . That Lesbian judge that Obama hired talked the others into redefining marriage. If the 2 people are the same sex then the marriage is not a real marriage
Many Judges think that straight people owe the gays something because of the persecution of gays so we are being forced to think marriage is something it is not because the court has the authority to order us to do so. It is about time someone said **** you to the court!

As an atheist I can sympathize with this clerk but it is her job and if she couldn't have swapped with another clerk who did not have an objection, then I am afraid she must be moved to an area in which this would not come up.

She should be forced to resign since she is unable to perform her duties. She can't be fired because she was elected. She really can't use her religious beliefs to deny licenses because she's been divorced several times and is on her 4th marriage.

In light of what the Bible says in Romans 1:26, Genesis 18 and 1 Corinthians 6: 9 and 10, she should be applauded and exonerated and lifted up as a beacon of hope for Christians all over the world who should stand up for what they believe in no matter what the cost. Our bodies are designed for heterosexuality so gay marriage is wrong. SCOTUS is wrong too. SCOTUS is breaking the law, not that clerk who will receive a special place in Heaven one day for standing up for the Bible and standing up for Jesus. Good for her! She rocks! How I would love to meet her. Thank God for crusaders like her.
