I'm an atheist and a homosexual, but I'm becoming more conservative: should I be a liberal instead?

Update:

Since that liberals are more in my favor when it comes to marriage and evolution?

Nothing we can do. Our personalities, our politics and our religion are all set during the formative years between birth and age five. There's nothing much we can do after that to change who we are and what we are.

Look at it like this. It was Conservatives who made the slave trade illegal, starting here in England, when William Wilberforce MP got his Private Member's Bill to Abolish the Slave Trade passed into English Law. That was in 1807.

Little by little, things improve in our democracy.

Here in UK back in the 1950s a man found 'guilty' of being a homosexual (like it's a crime) could be sent to prison and there chemically castrated for life.

In c1958 the late Leo Abse MP (Labour) got his private member's bill to allow two gay men to cohabit, passed into English Law.

It just goes on from there. A democracy is supposed to be inclusive, thus to allow all the people all of the time to enjoy equal rights and freedoms and that includes their sexuality no matter what some people may think. You know the sort, those who want everything for themselves and complete control of everyone else.

Nothing wrong with being a conservative - just don't expect me, a Progressive Socialist to vote for it.

But then in a democracy we have learned how to agree to disagree.

Yes you should be a liberal. You are are an Atheist so you believe nothing greater than yourself exists. Pretty much what every Liberal believes. Second you define yourself by your Homosexuality, If you asked a conservative to name 5 things that define who they are their sexuality wouldn't even be one of them. Ask a liberal and they would say I'm a gay, black(and being black isn't even require), liberal, atheist who supports equal rights for (put name of oppressed group of the week here) That is because liberals are always defining people as victims. If there they couldn't convince people they were victims because of their color, or gay victims, or Muslim victims or victims of the wealthy class, they wouldn't have anyone who would agree with one thing they stand for.

You can be whatever you want. It's true that most conservatives would rather you not exist, but if you feel more strongly about your political views that your sexuality and lack of belief, that's fine. Btw, that wasn't some weak attempt at guilt tripping. I'm serious, if you don't mind backing up people like that, it's your choice.

Examin what you think is correct and compare that to what you can find out.

For example, a libertarian (far right conservative) thinks government has only 3 functions, 1) Enforce the Laws, 2) Put out the fires and 3) Protect the borders. They firmly believe that anything else, like massive regulation, is not the responsibility of the federal government.

A good question to ask yourself would be at what level of government (city, county, state or federal) should SUBJECT be regulated. Subject could be education, environment, roads or infrastructure, etc.

Then listen to the leadership out there and see who you agree with.

The other thing to remember, there is rarely anything to vote for but there's always something to vote against.

Just because you're an Atheist and practice the abomination of homosexuality doesn't mean that you can't see common sense.

To be honest, you won't stay right wing, even if you progress into it temporarily because you reject the beginning of wisdom, and while right now you may accept much of the wisdom established by Christ, you will inevitably come to reject it in time as you continue to compromise on your beliefs till one day somehow that which is wrong will seem right and that which is right will seem wrong.

To be honest, I don't think you're even telling the truth. Most who are brainwashed to the left stay that way because the left is a belief of irrational emotional provocation that accepts what it is instructed to accept. Without that instruction, which the right wing does not really provide, you will never be able to trust what we believe in. In short, because the right isn't constantly telling you what to believe and that you're smart believing it, and that those who disagree are evil, you will never feel comfortable agreeing with our side. Thinking for one's self is a rather foreign and possibly intimidating practice for a typical left winger.

You want to change because it's been drilled into your brain that Conservative=Bad and Liberal=Good. That is simply not the case. You should pick a side based on your own mental and emotional judgement and not because of fear of getting into a disliked category.

You don't have to tow either party line completely. I don't. I supported Bill Clinton's low borrowing. But I quit considering myself a Democrat when I realized Obama isn't much better than a Republican at handling my money.

Absolutely and immediately. You must also become vegetarian, utilitarian, feminist, non speciist and communist. It is also necessary to protest against oil, industry, capitalism, MacDonald's, Walt Disney and Donald Trump. "Hilary is God(dess)-T-Shirts" are mandatory. Global warming is bad and anti capitalism is good. Computers: only I-MACs (better designed, look better in front of the Soviet communist party banner on your living room wall). And don't forge: Everything you own must begin with "Fair": Fair Trade, fair coffee, fair cars, fair baby diapers (gender neutral, please). Without all of that nobody can be homosexual and liberal at the same time, not even conservatives.

People are governed by standards they accept as fact. If those standards are more in line with conservatism, be a conservative. You can be a member of a party and not agree with everything on their platform. The platform will be completely different in 10 or 20 years anyways. It all comes down to those basic governing principles.
